Saudi Arabia’s Strategy for the Metals Processing Industry
The metals processing industry is as natural as oil and gas for the GCC due to the low cost of energy used in large amounts in smelters and processing plants. Motivated by forecasted population growth and economic development, the aluminium industry in the GCC region has been active in recent years and will continue to be so. Increased building construction and increased demand for aluminium cans and other are driving local demand for rolled aluminium; meanwhile, exports look favorable too with high energy costs throughout Europe. With the expected demand, we believe there is ample room for Saudi Arabia to enter into this growing industry.
We are studying the development of a metals processing cluster within Saudi Arabia, centering the cluster upon a world-class multi-purpose aluminium rolling mill targeted to both export markets and local consumption. The establishment of a rolling mill will encourage the next layer of downstream industrial manufacturing development, creating cascading opportunities in foil, packaging, construction materials, aluminium cans and transportation.
